Volunteer to Feed the Homeless Thanksgiving Houston

One-Time Opportunities and Special Projects

Team building. Meeting school service hour requirements. Scout Eagle and Gold Award projects. Learning more about our mission as a first-time volunteer. Having a calendar that's jam packed, but still wanting to make a difference.

These are just a few of the great reasons many Star of Hope volunteers schedule one-time opportunities or tackle special projects. For some, volunteering at Star of Hope is their annual service project. Others schedule multiple dates throughout the year. Our wide variety of opportunities offer lots of flexibility – There is something for everyone!

Holiday Meals

God has faithfully provided all the needed volunteers for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. However, our kitchens serve breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the year. Please consider scheduling another date. You will be a tremendous blessing to our clients – just without the turkey & dressing!

Volunteer Opportunities: Find an opportunity from the list below and complete our Volunteer Interest Form. A member of our Volunteer Services Team will contact you for availability and scheduling.

Assist in the Kitchen

We serve three meals a day, 365-days per year, at all three facilities. What an opportunity to encourage and uplift as you hand meal trays to our clients. Scheduled for individual volunteers or small groups on an ongoing or one-time basis. Volunteers help set-up, serve and clean-up. Faithful volunteers who know the routine are a special blessing to the kitchen staff and clients. The maximum number of volunteers per kitchen is six. Breakfast, lunch and dinner shifts available throughout the week.

New Haven Projects

Star of Hope's New Haven Program is a safe and caring permanent supportive housing program for men and women who are chronically homeless and diagnosed with mental illness. Star of Hope provides housing for New Haven residents at three New Hope Housing properties and has support staff onsite at each of those properties to provide a wide variety of services. With this support, formerly homeless New Haven residents are able to live independently.

  • Blessed Breakfast – Enjoy a time of fellowship while breaking bread together! Blessed Breakfast volunteers provide a simple continental breakfast for both New Haven residents and themselves each Monday – Saturday so that residents begin the day with positive social interaction over a delightful meal. Some volunteers may want to include a short devotion. Other might discuss current events; bring magazines or newspapers; or just get better acquainted. Volunteers arrive at 9:30 AM to set-up and host breakfast from 10 AM – 10:30 AM. Once breakfast is over, volunteers sweep up and are usually out-the-door by 11 AM. A group of 10 volunteers is ideal.

  • Lunch and Games –If your volunteers prefer a mid-day project, consider providing lunch for New Haven residents and your volunteers and hosting an after-lunch fun time with board games. Hamburgers and hotdogs are always a big hit – especially when combined with a rousing game of Uno or dominoes. Approximately 11:30 AM – 2 PM. 10 – 20 volunteers.

  • Host a Craft Project – The perfect opportunity for creative volunteers who want to share their love for arts & crafts with New Haven residents. Flexible afternoon/evening times. The maximum number of volunteers is 10.

  • Provide a Sweet Treat – Nothing beats delicious ice cream with lots of the fun topping on a hot Houston afternoon or evening. Host an afternoon or after-dinner ice cream social for our New Haven residents. Too cold for ice cream? What about individual pizzas baked in the community kitchen? New Haven residents and volunteers will have a great time of fellowship as everyone decides which toppings make the perfect pizza. A group of 10 volunteers is ideal.

Donation and Distribution Center

Behind-the-scenes and far from glamorous, but vital in getting donated into the hands of those in need. Donated items must be sorted, boxed, labeled and palletized for distribution. Small, organized groups of 10 or less can be scheduled Monday – Friday. Groups of 10 or less volunteers can be scheduled some Saturdays.

Host Activities for the Teens

Groups are needed to host art projects, field day events, pizza and skating parties, etc. for this incredible group of young people. Have a great hobby or career? Come share that and host a related activity. You will have as much fun as our teens do! Friday evenings. (Location: Women & Family Emergency Shelter and Transitional Living Center)

Notes of Encouragement

For volunteers of ALL ages! Make it a special day with Notes of Encouragement! We all love cards and special greetings! But our clients don't usually receive mail that is positive and uplifting. Your notes will be placed in client mailboxes or on bunk beds to bless, uplift and raise the self-esteem of who are homeless. You can use any type of card you prefer. Plain cardstock cut into fourths works great. You can simply pen a note or decorate the cards with markers, colored pencils and/or stickers. In other words, volunteers can unleash their compassion and creativity. Notes can be all occasion or seasonal, but should not contain any personal information, such as names or phone numbers.

Snacks & Goodnight – Transitional Living Center

FOR VOLUNTEERS OF ALL AGES! It can be a long time between dinner and breakfast when you can't raid the fridge for a snack. Thanks to the snacks you provide and serve, our clients end the day with a delicious blessing. Volunteers arrive at 7:45 PM to set-up. Clients are invited to come by for a snack beginning at 8:00. Snack time is over at 8:30 and volunteers are asked to sweep up. Please prepare for approximately 125. Monday – Sunday evenings.
